An important discussion is currently taking place in our city as a result of a decision made inside City Hall.
Last month, the city removed from display a menorah that has been a holiday tradition in Palm Beach Gardens City Hall. The subsequent public debate surrounding its removal is highlighting a broader issue about integrity, leadership and experience.
The removal was based on a new legal opinion from the city attorney concerning the separation of religion and government and the risk that displaying one religious symbol in a government lobby might require the city to allow any and all religious displays.
At the December city council meeting, when the removal became apparent, I immediately – and respectfully – disagreed with the decision. Speaking as a member of the public, I asked for the decision to be reconsidered.
Unfortunately, this issue has now been politicized by others who are using public comment at city council meetings to solicit votes, denounce the city, launch personal attacks, and inflame emotions.
This is a serious issue and it deserves serious people to address it.
I will never exploit public meetings for political gain. What is required is thoughtful, level-headed, informed discussion rather than personal attacks and pandering political theater at city council meetings.
Having most recently served on the Palm Beach Gardens City Council, I understand the process that led to this decision. I also understand the need for our council members to carefully weigh the recommendations of a city attorney.
Moving forward, I am hopeful that a well-informed council will take the lead in having this important public discussion while understanding the emotional effect the removal is having on the Jewish community.
A solution must be found that is in the best interest of all residents and all faiths. Real progress comes from working together, listening carefully, and when appropriate, thoughtfully revisiting policy.
My commitment to the Jewish community did not begin with this issue, and it will not end with it. My record reflects years of sustained involvement and advocacy, not momentary political opportunism.
During my previous term on the city council, I brought forward an antisemitism resolution, drafted by our city attorney and passed unanimously by our council, making Palm Beach Gardens only the second city in the nation to adopt such a measure.
From 2017 to 2025, I served on the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County, including work on the task force for combating antisemitism and Israel advocacy and the task force for legislative and community outreach. I have been a trustee of the Jewish Women’s Foundation of the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County since 2020 as well as a Lion of Judah. I am also a previous board member of Temple Emanuel in Palm Beach.
It is essential to respect religious expression while also functioning within legal boundaries. I am sure the current council is up to the task.
In the future, addressing sensitive policy decisions like this will require responsible, experienced leaders that reflect all our values and reject personal attacks and political pandering.
I look forward to a 2026 holiday season where we can all celebrate together.
